Union defeats St. Joseph in Sig Makofski Invitational, 106-62; Dutchmen play Richard Stockton for title

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.
-- Senior guard John Cagianello (Wethersfield, CT/Loomis Chaffee) scored 29 points in just 27 minutes and Union jumped out to a 20 point lead at halftime en route to a 106-62 victory over The College of St. Joseph (Vermont) Friday night in a first round game of the Sig Makofski Invitational Tournament at the Viniar Athletic Center. The Dutchmen improved to 7-3 while the Fighting Saints are 2-10.

The Dutchmen will play Saturday at 3 p.m. in the championship game against Richard Stockton. The Ospreys had defeated Oneonta State, 68-51 in the other first round game. The consolation contest is at 1 p.m.

Junior guard Joseph Mackey (Flushing, NY/Archbishop Molloy) scored 18 points for the Dutchmen and Kyle Grimm (Sherill, NY/Vernon-Verona Central) pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds and blocked two shots. The Dutchmen shot 53% for the night and 36% from three-point land, while having a 55-36 rebounding advantage over the Ospreys. All 16 players played in the contest for Union, and 14 of the 16 scored. Of the 16 players, 12 saw action of 10 minutes or more.

St. Joseph was led by Ian Nimblett, who had 15 points, and Jared Henry, who scored 11. The Fighting Saints shot 32% on the night and had a total of 24 turnovers.
 
Prior to the second game, Union honored senior guard Brian Scordato (Mt. Kisco, NY/Horace Greeley). He was recognized for becoming the 14th player in Union men's basketball history to record 1,000 career points, and received a huge ovation from the large crowd in attendance that featured many students back on campus after the break.

In the earlier game, Chris Jones (Englewood, NJ) scored 14 points and Jon Greene (Wildwood, NJ) added nine rebounds to lead Richard Stockton to a 68-51 win over Oneonta State. The Ospreys (8-2) were paced by Tobias Smith (Newark, NJ), who scored eight points, and Kevin Holmes (Atlantic City, NJ), who pulled down eight rebounds. Richard Stockton had a 47-28 rebounding advantage.
 
Jaysen Murphy (East Elmhurst, NY) led the Red Dragons (5-3) with 13 points and Sean Coffey (New Paltz, NY) added 10. Oneonta faced 21 turnovers but shot 28%).
